Build the Handoff Before It Becomes Urgent

Succession planning can start with one ordinary handoff—not a crisis. Choose a recurring responsibility and let its next owner lead one full cycle while you stay available for the agreed review point.

Before they begin, share the outcome, constraints, and decisions they can make independently. Ask them to identify one part of the process they would change; review the result together, then update the handoff notes.

This tests whether the responsibility is genuinely transferable—not just written down. The aim is continuity with room for the next owner’s judgment, rather than a perfect copy of your method.
