A Gentle Way to Repair Cross-Cultural Misunderstandings

A small practice can make intercultural conversations easier to repair without asking anyone to speak for an entire culture.

When a phrase lands differently than intended, pause and try three steps: name the words that caused confusion, ask what each person understood, then agree on clearer wording for the conversation. Anyone can request the pause; no one has to explain more than they choose. If the group keeps shared notes, update them so the same ambiguity is less likely to return.

The point isn’t to reach instant agreement about every meaning. It’s to make room for clarification while keeping responsibility shared—and to let people step away from the discussion if they need to.
