A Promise Needs a Review Point
A commitment can be sincere and still mean different things to two people.
Imagine agreeing to make time for a regular check-in. One person hears, “Let’s try this for a while”; the other hears, “This is our new routine.” If expectations later diverge, the problem may not be a lack of care—it may be that the agreement never said how long it would last or when to revisit it.
A useful lesson: make the scope and review point part of the agreement. “Let’s try this for a month, then talk about whether it still works for both of us” makes room for dependability and change. Revisiting a promise isn’t automatically breaking it; sometimes it’s how both people keep choosing it.
