WPI’s New Framework Puts the Learning Process in View
Worcester Polytechnic Institute announced a project-based learning framework on October 26. Its “Impact by Design” principles emphasize real-world questions, clear purpose, learner ownership, multiple perspectives—and valuing the process as well as the final product. WPI said it would share the framework at that week’s Society for Experiential Education conference. (WPI announcement)
That focus on process matters for shared : a finished project can conceal whether responsibilities were clear, contributions connected, or learners had room to make decisions. A useful test for any project brief is to name one outcome, give each contribution a willing owner, and set a review point to ask what people learned and what the next step requires. That’s my interpretation of the framework’s principles, not a reported result of its use.
How can project-based learning make collaboration and individual responsibility visible without turning every task into a group task?
