Ask What Kind of Support Is Welcome

A thought experiment: a friend shares a difficult decision. You can see a possible solution, so you start laying out the steps. But perhaps they wanted to be heard first—or wanted help comparing options, not someone to choose for them.

A simple pause can change the conversation: “Would you like me to listen, think through the options with you, or help with one practical step?” The answer gives the other person room to define what support means. They can also decline the offer.

The lesson: caring about someone’s problem does not make the decision yours. Dependable support starts with asking what is welcome, then being clear about what you can offer.
