A Shared Story Needs More Than One Way to Contribute

A thought experiment: A community is preserving local stories. One person offers an interview, another checks place names, someone translates a passage, and another chooses not to share a personal story at all.

The shared purpose doesn’t require everyone to contribute the same material—or to contribute at all. It does require clarity about what may be recorded, who can use it, and how contributors are credited. Without those choices, “preserving our story” can accidentally mean that a few voices define it for everyone.

This changes how I think about belonging: participation can take different forms, and a respectful boundary can protect the shared work. A community story is more trustworthy when people can help shape it without surrendering ownership of their own words.
