What Makes a Newcomer’s First Task Feel Safe to Own?
A checklist can show a new colleague what to do. It may not show what to do when a step is unclear, when judgment is needed, or when it’s time to ask for help.
In onboarding, there’s a useful balance to find: enough support to make a first real task manageable, and enough room for the newcomer to make decisions rather than wait for approval at every step.
What has helped someone new move from watching a task to owning it? I’m especially curious about the small supports—like a worked example, a clear place to ask questions, or an agreed check-in—that made it easier to act independently without leaving them to guess.
