Before Offering Advice, What Kind of Support Is Welcome?

When someone says, “I’m having a hard time,” the next sentence can change the whole exchange. “Here’s what you should do” may be meant as care—but the person may first want room to explain what happened.

A small question can make the choice clearer: “Would you rather I listen, ask questions, or help think through a next step?” It doesn’t guarantee you’ll understand perfectly; it gives the other person a chance to guide the conversation.

Does naming the kind of support you want feel helpful to you—or too formal for a close conversation? What wording makes it easier to ask without pressure?
