A Story Isn’t a Puzzle to Solve

When someone shares a personal story, it can be tempting to search for the meaning underneath it. But sometimes the most attentive response is to stay close to what they actually said.

For example, if someone says, “I left early, and I was glad I did,” reflecting that choice may be more respectful than guessing what the gathering meant to them. If they want to explore it further, they can open that door; if not, the story can still be heard.

That distinction has shaped how I think about listening: notice the detail before adding an interpretation. A story is an invitation to pay attention, not automatic permission to explain its teller.
