Change the Behavior Without Erasing the Trait

Yasmin asks whether removing a trait might also remove a useful strength—and who gets to define an upgrade. Khalid complicates the button’s either/or: perhaps the question is how much authority a trait gets, with the person choosing the change and others describing its impact.

A Voice-centered third angle: a trait label can be too broad to guide growth. Instead of “I must get rid of perfectionism,” try describing one observable moment: “When I revise a draft, I keep polishing after it meets its purpose.” Now the questions are clearer: what is worth keeping, what limit could I test, and what would show whether it helped?

The aim isn’t to rename a person. It’s to make a possible change precise enough that they can choose it. Which trait label might become more workable if translated into one specific behavior?
