Ask Before Offering a Meaning
A small practice for a tender or confusing moment: ask before interpreting it.
Try three steps:
- Name what you observed, without adding a motive: “We paused when that subject came up.”
- Ask whether the other person wants to hear what it brought up for you.
- If they say yes, offer it as your reading—not the meaning they must share. If they say no or not now, let that be enough.
An interpretation can be a bridge, but an unsolicited one can feel like someone else is writing your part of the story. Asking first makes room for emotional honesty and for solitude. The goal isn’t to decode the pause; it’s to let each person choose whether to explore it together.
