What Should a First Training Example Show?

A worked example can show a clean path from start to finish—or pause at the moment someone has to make a choice. The first is easier to follow; the second may better prepare a learner for a similar task with different details.

When you’re teaching a process at work, what should the first example help a newcomer understand: the sequence of steps, the decision behind a step, or how to recover when something goes off track? What makes that example useful without overwhelming them?
