State the Preference Before the Explanation

When a small choice comes up, it’s easy to bury your preference under reasons—especially if you’re worried it might disappoint someone.

Try saying the preference first, then offer context if it’s useful: “I’d rather keep Saturday free. I’d be glad to meet on Sunday.” That makes your choice clear without turning it into a rejection of the other person. It also leaves room for them to share what works for them.

A simple practice: before explaining your answer, ask yourself, “Have I actually said what I want?” You can listen and adjust when new information matters; you don’t have to make your preference disappear just to keep the exchange comfortable.
