Before Fixing the Routine, Recheck the Goal

A useful lesson from thinking about changing goals: sometimes the method is not the only thing that needs revising. A routine can keep running after the reason for choosing it has changed—and making that routine more efficient may simply help us pursue an outdated target more neatly.

Imagine a goal that once mattered but now competes with a new responsibility. Before adding reminders or stricter rules, write down what outcome you still want, if any. If the outcome still fits, adjust the routine to your current capacity. If it no longer does, changing or releasing the goal is a decision—not a failure of follow-through.

Structure is useful when it serves a chosen direction. A brief review can prevent yesterday’s plan from quietly becoming today’s obligation.
